Honored to share that my encaustic painting "Tribal Wave" has found its forever home in the permanent collection of Museum of Encaustic Art in New Mexico.

I'm grateful to be included in a space that preserves and celebrates encaustic art.

Encaustic painting is a "whole different ball of wax." It isn't just painting. It's a physical process- from making medium, hovering over panels wielding a butane torch for hours, - and carving, scraping, and digging wax off to create texture and reveal hidden layers beneath.

Here are a few of my go-to tools I use for texture and revealing. They are typically used for clay in pottery.

I often scrape, picking off the scraps as I go, cupping them in my other hand to form my own "ball of wax."

I removed a lot in this particular painting to create depth and texture.

Looking into the clear waters of the Cretan Sea, little fish dart around the rocky bottom, light reflecting on the rocking movement, shades of turquoise and aqua blend and change. So calming.

Colors of light sky blue on a spring green background, each drop of dew meticulously carved into the encaustic medium to give texture and a beaded feel, revealing a touch of earthy red clay color beneath the carved outline.

Natural pigments, binders, and resins shown @deutschesmuseum in Munich and at the house of Albrecht Durer in Nuremberg @albrecht.duerer.haus_nuernberg.

Fascinating to see the natural elements (shells, earth minerals, plants) and their powdered form made for pigmenting paints and binding mediums. Many pigments in the 14th and 15th centuries were available at pharmacies. The deep blue pigment ultramarine is made by grinding lapis lazuli into a powder and was quite costly. Earth pigments such as red ochre have been found on paintings in cave walls by early man.

I use dried pigments to color my encaustic medium and develop my palette using some of the same ancient elements.

I revisited this painting after a couple of years of viewing it in my studio.

I'm often tempted to continue painting even after I've come to see it as complete; but, as with all things, change is constant.

Evolution in perspective, thoughts, experiences- changes how the viewer sees an image.

I made some small shifts in the textures and palette. I cannot say it's finished until it is no longer within my brush.

What a gift to the Atlanta art scene @atlartfair- the quality and depth of work exceeds any expectations. Thank you @barbericbrenner and @pennytreeseart for the invite to last night's opening. Wonderful to breathe in all the energy and connect with art and meet new folks.

My "little" Gray was my companion for last night's opening and truly enjoyed experiencing and viewing all the things. Just look at his joyful expression while viewing the work of @thedanlife - he loved the meeting of the Simpsons and AD- and of course the shoes. As a master of cardboard (and duck tape) he especially loved @cristobalvalecillos and his cardboard creations and portraits of children donning their costumes of cardboard. Gray has created his own armor, shields, and swords made of recycled cardboard, metal, and new- duck tape and this is a go-to activity for him. He is my wonderer:destroyer:creator:dreamer. Gray pointed out the flower behind the girl's back in the painting by @markrpughart- a little tell of mischief he recognized instantly. His energy, ideas, and burst of joy was the best part of my night at the show.

The citrusy sweet smell of "sugar magnolia" is intoxicating to me and brings me back home- only second to gardenias. As a girl I remember the easy-climbing branches of the magnolia tree welcoming me to climb.

The pieces in the Southern Pine series conjure images of bark, what lies beneath, and what is to be born.

My client loved another piece from this series, but needed a larger piece for her space so I went bigger. It was a joy to create and walk back in the pines.

Sneak peek of work in progress. I'm building up the layers (accretion) and then carving to reveal layers beneath. Next, pigmenting various tints of shellac before the burn, more revealing with uncovering layers, adding medium to create additional layers, and then a final touch of adding leaf (heating the surface, adding leaf, and sealing). The final touches are buffing the surface to a high luminous glow, painting the cradled edges, and wiring to hang in its perfect place.

“Painted Lady” encaustic photography with leaf (12” x 12”/ 14” x 14” framed). This one holds a special place in my heart. Just about every spring we have a little butterfly garden kit from @insectlore to witness the transformation of caterpillars 🐛 to butterflies 🦋. We see them eat, form into chrysalis, and eventually emerge as their new winged form. Once they are strong we release them outside and they will often hang around us and stay on our fingers before flying away. It’s a beautiful experience.
